BRIEF NOTES

(Excerpted from liner notes of Killer Love by Kathy Y. Wilson)

This, the solo recorded debut of Gospel Blues belter P. Ann Everson-Price, is like Aretha first dipping her Detroit Gospel toe into the world’s secular pool.

It’s exciting, long awaited and rife with that same contained sexuality percolating beneath the surface; it’s seasoned with the same kind of growling and slinking singing Tina Turner turned on the world once she emerged from the Southern churches of her girlhood. P. Ann’s knock-down, drag-out delivery and presentation hovers between the majesty and pageantry of Gospel legends Albertina Walker, Tramaine Hawkins and Shirley Caesar and the roadhouse, juke joint Color Purple (the Hollywood version) type of singing that needs blasting horn sections, crying guitars and thundering drums.

This dichotomy, this pull, this ageless battle for the soul of Saturday night sinners slinking into Sunday morning pews is the genius of P. Ann captured fully and beautifully here on Killer Love...

P. Ann’s a natural...

Killer Love contains covers of songs anybody who knows P. Ann would never associate with her repertoire. However, they are infused, in that grand Everson-Price tradition, with all the soul, emotion and drama of the show-stopping P. Ann I first saw sing in a church and not a club.

Kathy Y. Wilson is a columnist for Cincinnati CityBeat, a commentator for National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” and the author of: Your Negro Tour Guide: Truths In Black & White (Emmis Books).
